While living in a traditional un-heated thatched roof house for 3 years, he found that the Japanese have been using buckwheat hull-filled pillows and futons decades-the hulls being a useful byproduct of the constant use of buckwheat seeds to make flour for buckwheat noodles. After enduring months of therapy and chiropractic adjustments to resolve neck injuries sustained in an automobile accident, Crisp decided to make himself a buckwheat hull-filled pillow like those he remembered using while in Japan. Within two weeks Crisp's neck pain was completely gone.
His success was so amazing that friends were quickly asking Crisp to make up pillows for them. After creating a variety of pillow and futon prototypes, Crisp came up with a group that he felt maximized the healing properties of the buckwheat hulls while adding to the comfort of the user.
